Messenia is one of the most exciting regions in Europe for a road trip. In an hour’s drive from Kalamata Airport (KAT) you can find yourself at the lagoon of Voidokilia, in the tower villages of Mani, at a table with fish in front of the Methonian castle, or at Costa Navarino — one of the world’s top resorts.
Servin Car Rentals presents you with the five most important routes of Messinia: Kalamata, Coastal Road, Mani, Stoupa & Kardamyli, and Costa Navarino.
Start: Kalamata — Parking, Tolls and Urban Driving
The Morea Motorway If you are coming from Athens, the Morea Motorway (E65/A7) connects Athens → Corinth → Tripoli → Kalamata in 2.5–3 hours (250km).
Parking in Kalamata
- Blue Zones: Scratch card from the nearest kiosk. Operating 08:00–20:00.
- White lines: Free parking, no time limit.
- Private parking near the marina: the most comfortable option.
GPS Parking Kalamata:
- Marina Parking: 37.0373°N, 22.1131°E
- Central (near Archaeological Museum): 37.0393°N, 22.1147°E
- Navarinou Beach (free, fills up early): 37.0352°N, 22.1243°E
Kalamata Beach Road The Navarinou Beach Avenue (3km) is the city’s liveliest urban route — parallel to the famous beach, it leads all the way to the Marina. At sunset, it transforms into a lively pedestrian street. Drive it slowly, with the windows open.
Mani Peninsula — The Last Wild Corner of Greece
Mani is like nowhere else: Byzantine towers, abandoned villages, sea caves and secluded beaches that haven’t changed in centuries. Traveling here by car you discover why Messinia is a trip of a lifetime.
| Destination | Distance | Time |
| Kardamyli | 35km | ~40 minutes |
| Stupa | 40km | ~45 minutes |
| Areopolis | 65km | ~1 hour |
| Diros Caves | 78km | ~1 hour 15 minutes |
| Gerolimenas (Vathia Mani) | 95km | ~1 hour 30 minutes |
Road Conditions The main coastal road (EO82) from Kalamata to Stoupa is in good condition with impressive sea views. After Stoupa, the road narrows and becomes winding. For exploring the Deep Mani (Gerolimenas, Vathia, Cape Tainaro) an automatic SUV is recommended.
Key Stops:
- Kardamyli: Lively village with seaside taverns and access to the Vyros Gorge.
- Stoupa: Two wonderful beaches within walking distance. Rarely crowded before 10:30.
- Areopoli: The “capital” of Mani — towers, central square, local honey.
- Diros Caves: One of the most impressive sea caves in Europe, explored by boat.
- Dathia: An abandoned tower house emerging from the rock — one of the most iconic landscapes of Mani.
- Cape Tainaro: The southernmost point of continental Europe.
Important Tip: Fill up in Kalamata or Stoupa. Gas stations are rare in Vathia Mani.
Stoupa & Kardamyli — The Perfect Beach Getaway
Stoupa is the most popular beach town in Mani: two sandy beaches side by side, crystal clear waters, relaxed atmosphere. Ideal for a day trip from Kalamata.
Stoupa Parking Parking is limited in August. Arrive before 10:00 for a beach spot. Paid parking at the north entrance (GPS: 37.2631°N, 22.0114°E)
Kardamyli (10km north of Stoupa) Perhaps the most beautiful village in the Peloponnese — old neighborhood with stone houses, excellent restaurants, access to Taygetos. The road through the old village is narrow — drive slowly and enjoy.
Costa Navarino & Pylos — Luxury and Ancient History
Costa Navarino is the leading luxury resort in the Peloponnese (Romanos, Westin, W, Mandarin Oriental). It is located near the historic town of Pylos, overlooking the Bay of Navarino.
From KAT Airport: ~55km, 55–60 minutes via EO82 south. GPS entry Costa Navarino: 36.9747°N, 21.6687°E
What to See in the Area:
- Voidokilia: The most photogenic beach in mainland Greece — circular lagoon, sand dune, completely round. Divari Parking (GPS: 36.9951°N, 21.6503°E) — Arrive before 09:30 in summer.
- Pylos: Venetian port, Niokastro castle, picturesque central square.
- Nestor’s Palace: The best preserved Mycenaean palace in Greece, 15km north of Pylos.
- Methoni Castle: 30km south of Pylos — one of the largest Venetian fortresses in the Mediterranean.
